Florida visible  satellite
imagery showing sea
breeze storm development
Read our daily sea breeze chasing blog.
Every year from May through September we chase daily storms in
central and south Florida. Heating during the day helps setup
boundaries  along the coastal locations and inland locations around
Lake Okeechobee. Hot air rising over the inland locations lets the cooler
air over the coastal waters on each coast to rush inland producing a sea
breeze boundary. This boundary moving inland and converges with
either the Lake Okeechobee breeze boundaries or the west coast sea
breeze boundary.

Once this convergence takes place, thunderstorms develop and pulse
along the boundary. Some produce short-lived severe weather with
winds over 60mph and small hail. Lightning is always very intense with
these storms and is what makes Florida known for is lightning each day.

Chas'in Florida 4 Life
My storm chasing life
was born out of viewing
local thunderstorms in
South Florida as a child.

Over the years I
studied how
thunderstorms
developed and more
about local forecasting.
I would ride my bike to
the west side of
Sunrise, Florida to
watch the storms over
the Everglades develop
and move towards the
coast.

Once in my teens I was
now driving out to the
storms and chasing
them back towards the
coast not knowing this
was known as storm
chasing. I was hooked
for life and it became a
daily run for me during
the summer months.

I'm now in my 30s and
and these days I travel
all over the nation in
search of storms, but I
still always enjoy
chasing my Florida sea
breeze thunderstorms.

Mobile Office Image:  This photo shows the equipment I use to chase
and document Florida Sea Breeze thunderstorms. I use a laptop with
wireless cell data card for internet while mobile for nexrad radar images
every five minutes.  The laptop also runs my GPS software with my USB
GPS unit on the dash.

For camera's I have a dash Sony cam and my Pro Sony VX2100 cam. For
Digital I use a 5mega Nikon. I use a ICOM 2m/440 mobile Ham Radio
to communicate and monitor local area Skywarn nets, National Weather
Service warnings and discussions, as well as talk with other chasers while
in the field.

The map below shows the area's with the best daily convergence. These
area's are great for viewing thunderstorms from noon until evening.
Some days storms fire off early and set off outflow boundaries that help
in production of more intense storms later in the evening.

Area's in black are target locations you can find us almost daily when we
are out chasing for storms. Its a good bet you will see some action.

Storm Photos:
Image(s) below: A classic sea breeze produced strong storm located
inland along US 27 along the Palm Beach and Broward county line.

The storm has a impressive heavy rain core with a devloping shelf cloud
as the storm starts to gust out. Sometimes these gusts outs that
produce outflow boundaries with help fire off a new storm up or down the
sea breeze boundary later in the day or evening.
Radar Image:  This Nexrad radar image is from the Miami NWS Office.
This image shows the well developed east coast and southwest coast
sea breezes. It also shows that storms have already developed in Palm
Beach county further north along the boundary.
