| Left south Florida and headed for the Florida western Panhandle on June 10, 2005. Once in the Panhandle we continued to monitor recon data and the National Hurricane Center fixes on Arlene. At the same time watching VIS and IR satellite imagery. The evening before she made landfall in the Florida panhandle she was showing signs that she was trying to become stronger with deep bursts of convection on the east-northeast quads of the system. By the next morning we was wrapping in dry air from the west Gulf of Mexico and convection was fading fast. Landfall around Pensacola Beach, Florida that midday. Pretty much right in the same locations hit very hard by Category 3 Hurricane Ivan. First noticed the first mild storm surge on the west side of the island. As the late morning continued the winds just east of Pensacola Beach increased to 50-55mph with a "few" higher gusts right along the waters edge. Most of the photos and video in this report were shot 3-5 east of Pensacola Beach along the Gulf waters on the island side. With little rain due to very little deep convection at the time of landfall, the coastal towns and island became a sand-storm as dry beach sand was being blown all over the place. The center of Arlene moved over the beach area and the winds shifted northwest and the sun came out as the west side of her was convection free and nothing but dry air wrapping in. A little impressive area of winds encountered on such a weak non-convective Tropical Storm. A early start to 2005 Hurricane Season. |
