Hurricane Dennis 1999 -
We left south Florida to follow and intercept Hurricane Dennis along the
southeastern United States coastline. We slowly made our way up the
east coast of Florida as Dennis continued northbound. Dennis tracked
parallel to the Florida and Georgia coasts, with tropical storm force
winds remaining mostly offshore. When we made it to Morehead City,
North Carolina we setup camp at a local motel and waited on Dennis's
close pass. The next morning hurricane force "gusts" woke us up and
out we went for almost 4 hours to take and record observations as
Dennis was passing 55-60 miles to our south. We were north-northeast
of the eye and were getting almost sustained hurricane force winds. We
do think for about a 15 minute period we feel we might have had
sustained hurricane force winds when were where out on the beach at
Atlantic Beach, NC.

One tornado was reported with Dennis on 4 September. This F2 tornado
in Hampton VA caused an estimated $7 million damage and 15
injuries, 6 of them serious. .    Hurricane Chasers Jeff Gammons and
David Cornwell intercepted Hurricane Dennis 1999 for Weathervine.
