| Hurricane Floyd 1999 - Our Hurricane Floyd chase is what you would call "nothing went right" type of chase. First off we got a late start to our target area ( Carolina's) due to us having to board up our own homes with the possible threat from Floyd in West Palm Beach, Florida. Once we were all set, we were delayed once again by a CNN interview we did for the "Talk Back Live" show. The show producers had us on standby during the whole show via cell phone when we were along the coast of northern Palm Beach, County. By late that afternoon we were on our way north up the Florida east coast. (Keep in mind there were already active hurricane warnings from S. FL to GA) We got to Melbourne, Florida that evening and setup camp for a few hours waiting for Floyd to pass us up off the coast about 65 miles to the east. That night brought a few "feeder bands" ashore with 45-50mph tropical storm force winds. Local Melbourne, FL police were so happy to see us, they never left our sides for about 2 hours. They were so scared from reports that the Cat 4 hurricane could come ashore at our location. One good feeder band came ashore creating a power flash party all over the Melbourne Beach area. We shot some footage of the down tree's and power poles. Then after things calmed down a little, we setup and did one of our live internet radio feeds back to Ft. Lauderdale, FL (The Weather Information Network). After we completed that, we got some current recon data and satellite pictures and felt we needed to start heading north once again. We headed back to the west to take I-95 north up the coast, and make up some time. After 45 minutes on the interstate we found ourselfs needing some gas and planned on stopping at the next exit 25 miles up the highway. NOPE! No gas was to be found! This was not due to people filling up before the storm, no no, it was due to none of the stations were open. Hurricane warnings issued early that evening had gas stations closing up before 10pm and this happened all the way up the coast. We were stuck! Stuck with only a little fuel left and all gas stations closes everywhere. After chatting with a State Trooper we learned everything was closed up to Jacksonville, FL and back south to Jupiter, FL. So we knew this was the end of the chase, so we setup camp in a truck rest stop on I-95 in the woods and slept to the tropical storm winds pushing the truck back-and-forth. By morning our warnings were dropped as Hurricane Floyd took aim on the Carolina's, and we knew there was no getting to the target area now before landfall. Gased up the truck and headed home... Have to love truck stops in 50mph winds!!! - Jeff Gammons / David Cornwell :-) |
