We left West Palm Beach, Florida around 11:45pm thursday September
13, 2001 and headed for our first target. Ft Myers, Florida, and we
planned to move a bit to the north after sunrise on friday. Once we
reached Ft. Myers, FL we setup in a Super8 motel and reviewed current
data and satellite and radar imagery for fixes on the center. We felt we
needed to leave right at that moment and place ourself farther north
near Venice, Florida since Gabrielle was due west of us and 80 miles off
the coast moving northeast at 10mph. So we checked out 20 minutes
after checking in, and headed north up highway 41. We reached
Venice, Florida and setup at the end of a inlet out into the Gulf of
Mexico. After being interview by local media and locals that came to
see the surf..... Gabrielle showed her ture self...Here we go!
Both SUV's had weather stations on top (ie anemometer, barometer,
Etc) for recording weather data. As the "eyewall" or "suface center"
made landfall over us our pressure dropped to 983MBs for about an
hour. We had about 5 minutes of calm then we were blasted with
sustained 55-65 mph winds with many gusts to 81-85 mph. (Review
photo gallery) We recorded the storm surge as the eyewall moved
ashore and took wind readings at open location at the inlet. After the
center was half on shore, we started to move up the coast a few miles
still encountering 60mph sustained winds.
