second deadliest and second strongest hurricane within the Atlantic
basin during the 1998 season. Its 17 day journey resulted in seven
landfalls, extending from the northeastern Caribbean to the coast of
Mississippi, and 602 fatalities -- mainly in the Dominican Republic
and Haiti.
The Chase
First of two chases with Hurricane Georges took place on Marco
Island, Florida where storm chaser Jeff Gammons along with Kersten
McClung encountered and film hurricane force gusts right along the
coast for a few hours as Georges passed offshore about 150 miles.
The second chase intercept was a direct intercept with the eyewall of
Georges in Mississippi. The chasers on this mission were Jeff
Gammons, Jim Williams, and Kersten McClung.
