Hurricane Rita Chase Intercept 2005
Key West, Florida

We opted to only chase Hurricane Rita in the Florida Keys. The Northern
Gulf coast landfall along the Texas and Louisiana border at night was
just going to be another night landfall in a low populated area with little
lights and road networks along the coastal area.

Chris Collura and Jeff Gammons headed south from South Florida into
the Florida Keys. Once in Key West pretty much stayed on the northeast
side of the island waiting on the wind shift and the surge to come in.

After a few hours of filming calm sea then transition into a rough rising
surge sea we drove around the island shooting different locations along
the water. Then once the stronger winds came over the island we
returned to the northeast side near the Key West Best Western, a
favorite of Jeff Gammons when in the Keys.

Now the surge was pushing across the road into the Best Western. Here
we filmed the rest of the storm for hours. Storm surge and the winds
made for some impressive images.

Rita went on to become a intense hurricane in the Gulf and then made
landfall along the Tx / LA coastline.
